Bulletin Boards

What is the purpose of a bulletin board?

  • To provide residents with resources and information
  • A means to identify and respond to the needs of your community
  • A way to advertise and create excitement for upcoming programs
    • If you can stay consistent with this throughout the entire year, your residents will know what to expect for the month and can get excited about the programs to come

How do you execute a ‘good’ bulletin?

  • Leave enough time to create one!
    • Sounds easy enough, but ensure that you are putting enough time aside in your busy schedule to make your bulletin (it’s only 1hr every month… give or take)
  • Be neat
    • Residents can see the amount of time and effort you put into making each bulletin so cut the paper nice, take the time to properly glue down your information etc.
  • Does your bulletin have a point?
    • Ask yourself what needs are being met and the message you are sending
    • Does your content want to make your residents take interest in your bulletin?
    • It’s perfectly fine to make a ‘fun’ bulletin that may not be as serious or information dense as others, but do something to make it interactive or interesting enough to catch the eyes of your residents
    • Is there anything that could possibly offend a resident?
  • Be creative
    • Residents will appreciate your efforts to make your bulletin interesting
    • Don’t be afraid to put your personal flare into it, have fun!

Tips

  • Get to know your residents- if you notice a lot of them enjoy being outside, perhaps do a bulletin containing what Kelowna has to offer for hikes and other activities
    • First one? Think about the useful information to know upon moving into residence in Kelowna (ex. hiking locations, how to take the bus, get to know others on your floor, how to do laundry etc.)
  • GIVE YOURSELF TIME. If you wait until the morning before your bulletin is due, you may find yourself rushing to finish and not creating a nice bulletin board. Remember, bulletins shouldn’t be the stressful part of the job, it should be the fun one
  • Bulletins don’t have to be plain rectangular posters with information on it, make the bulletin into the shape of a phone, or into multiple planets (circles) for a plan-it bulletin (get it??)

Bulletin Boards should have something that is interesting to your community, bright colours to draw readers in, and large, legible font!
